The Woman in the Background

Dear Mom,

There was a photo taken at my wedding a few months ago (remember that big, insanely expensive party?) that I think sums up the kind of mom you are. It was a candid photo, I don’t think either of us knew the photographer was snapping away. I was getting my hair done and you were standing in the background keeping an eye on things and beaming with pride.

You see, this is the type of mom you are and have always been. You are selfless, encouraging, and put your children in the light while you stand closely behind, making sure everything is perfect.

You have given my sisters and I the ability to stand on our own and take risks, yet feel safe knowing you are not far should something go wrong.

You have a plethora of incredible skills and talents and it would be so easy for you to constantly put yourself in the limelight, showing off what a good mom, wife, and person you are. Instead, you stay in the background making sure your loved ones are happy and cared for.

You have kept our family running smooth, healthy, and happy for over 20 years and your life and love continues to be a blessing every single day.

Thank you for all the times you helped me succeed and stood quietly by congratulating me on my achievement, when all along it was you who got me there.

While you bring out the best in others and don’t ever try to be the center of attention, your talents and amazing qualities never go unnoticed by your family or anyone who meets you. You may be a “behind the scenes” woman, but your presence in any room is overwhelming in the best way possible. You make everyone feel happy, accepted, and loved.

Happy Mother’s Day you wonderful woman, you!! Thank you for making me who I am today and giving me some seriously big mom shoes to fill someday. I love you!
