Love of a Child

See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are!
–1 John 3:1

This past weekend, after much anticipation, I met my new nephew, Liam. This 7 pound squirming little human made my heart happier than I can ever remember. He slept in my arms for countless hours and I felt so much joy just watching every little unconscious movement he would make. Getting to spend time with Liam made me realize two things:

  1. People who abuse their children are sick in the head. They deserve to rot in jail, or worse.
  2. The love that our God has for us goes way beyond the love any human can feel towards another human–wow!
While studying Liam in his sleep, I realized that the love an adult has towards a child is so rare. How often do we love another person wholeheartedly and expect nothing in return? Almost never. Even with family members, a spouse, or best friends, there is always going to be a guarding of the heart, no matter how small or unintentional. When you love a child it is without restraint, without hesitation. You flood them with your love and open yourself up to them in unimaginable ways.
Again, watching Liam, I thought to myself  “I don’t care if Liam is a doctor or a garbage man, marries a man, woman, or chimpanzee,  lives in a penthouse or a cardboard box…I will always love him with every piece of me.”
An overwhelming feeling came over me on the drive home from Virginia. I almost felt as though God was telling me “you know that love you have for Liam? Multiply that by infinity and that is my love for you.” I almost broke down in the McDonald’s drive thru but managed to hold it together :) We are God’s children, and He loves us and will never leave us.  No matter the decisions we make or route we choose for our lives, He will love us. He may not be entirely pleased with some of the choices we make, but His love never wavers.

  2. Courtney,

During the days after our precious Timmy went to heaven, I was filled with an indescribable certainty that, as deeply as I love Tim, God loves him infinitely more….. I believe that message came straight from God’s heart to mine; He was giving me comfort in my grief.

I am so happy that you felt the same way the other day regarding God’s love for all of us.

I am reading an amazing book now, called simply “Heaven,” by Randy Alcorn. It tells what the present heaven is like for those who have already gone there. It also says that the earth will be restored to its perfect state when Christ returns — not destroyed. It is a fascinating book, especially as it describes what we will all be doing in heaven!

    Love you, Mo Mo
